Advanced Emergency Medical Technician


This course will build on the student's knowledge as an EMT and provide the student with roles and responsibilities of the Advanced EMT provider including injury prevention and infectious disease; an overview of human systems; pharmacology; venous access; airway management; training for management of medical and trauma emergencies; special considerations of the obstetric, neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients; and a focus on assessment-based management. This course will provide the student the opportunity to apply past and current cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in a supervised clinical or field setting and prepare for National Registry Testing.

Students will gain the knowledge of the following:

    • Patient Assessment-Trauma
    • Patient Assessment-Medical
    • Ventilatory Management
    • Cardiac Arrest Management/AED
    • IV and Medication Skills
    • Pediatric intraosseous Skills
Course Pre-Requisites:
  • Possess current certification at the EMT level
  • Current TB Testing (Within 1 year)
  • Current CPR Health Care Provider Card
  • Blood Pressure Cuff and Stethoscope

Roland Barlow

Roland has been a longtime resident of Washington County and one of the first paramedics certified in this area. He has served as a coordinator/instructor for paramedic and EMS programs at Dixie State University. His experience includes over thirty five years of emergency services in fire and EMS. He is a certified instructor trainer for the American Heart Association, Course Coordinator and Instructor and Training Officer for the Utah Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and Course Coordinator Instructor for Emergency Medical Services for Children.

Shellie Hurt

Shellie Hurt

Shellie brings to the Dixie Technical College a vast array of knowledge and expertise. She has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Utah State University. She is a Social Worker, specializing in drug and alcohol addiction and recovery. Shellie is certified in the State of Utah as a AEMT, Fire I & II, and a Utah Certified Fire and EMS Instructor. Shellie is also employed with Ivins City as a Firefighter/AEMT.
