CDL - Commercial Drivers License


Training in this program will give students professional driver training that focuses on both classroom work and in-the-vehicle training time. After over-the-road experience with professional, experienced instructors, plus lab and range time, participants master the complete range of driver competencies and become safe, comfortable, confident, law-abiding drivers. Get prepared to take the Utah State Written Exam on control skills for the Class 8 Truck/Trailer and Utah State Preventative Maintenance of tractor and trailer.

Students will gain the knowledge of the following:

  • Preventative Maintenance of tractor and trailer
  • Tractor/trailer control systems
  • Communication skills, Employer/employee relations
  • Federal Commercial Safety Alliance Systems
  • Space management techniques
  • Tractor/trailer coupling and uncoupling
  • Speed Management, Night driving
  • Backing Skills, Straight line, Alley Dock, Parallel Park, Offset
  • City and Highway driving

Course Pre-Requisites

  • Must possess valid Utah State drivers license or equivalent
  • Driving record with no DUI, negligent, reckless or hit and run infractions within the past five years
  • No more than 3 moving violations in the past 36 months
  • Must be able to pass the Federal DOT physical exam and drug screen
  • No felony convictions within five years
  • Minimum age of 18 years old to enroll in commercial driving
  • Minimum age of 21 years old to enroll in long haul commercial driving
  • Drug test will be administered during the first week of school and as needed if reasonable suspicion presents itself with the student

Neal Shepherd

Neal brings an array of education and experience to the Dixie Technical College He graduated from Dixie Junior College with an Associates Degree, and Southern Utah State College with a Bachelor’s Degree. He served with the Utah Highway Patrol for several years prior to being the District Manager for Arrow Automotive. Neal owned and operated a trucking company in the St. George area making him a perfect fit for the Dixie Technical College CDL program.
