Medical Assisting Students

Practical Nursing

The Practical Nursing Program at Dixie Tech will prepare students to provide basic entry-level care for people who are sick, injured, recuperating or incapacitated in one way or another. Students learn to recognize and address the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural needs of individuals. Upon graduation, students are prepared to take the Practical Nursing licensure exam to become a Licensed Practical Nurse – LPN. Students who achieve successful completion of the Practical Nursing Program at Dixie Tech have the option to continue on to Dixie State University through a "bridge" program allowing a seamless transition to continue on towards an AAS RN.

Students will gain the knowledge of the following:

  • Practice and develop assessment skills caring for patients across the lifespan.
  • Collaborative care plan implementation, patient education, and discharge teaching.
  • Prepare and give patient medications including injections.
  • Place and monitor indwelling catheters.
  • Wound management including cleansing and dressing wounds.
  • Assist with bathing, dressing, personal hygiene, standing, and walking.
  • Start intravenous catheters and basic fluid management.
